Luton College of Higher Education

Luton College took the step to opt-out of Local Authority control and became an independent corporation as of the 1st April 1989.

The project included: a Management Accountant role in the new finance structure whose specific responsibilities were: Annual  budgets; management accounts including development and implementation of the reporting system; costing of individual courses.

The project later widened to include handling the insurance function for the college. This involved arranging cover, processing claims and advising officers of the college.  As the college moved through a period of rapid change, the finance function had to adapt.  With the introduction of advanced computer systems, systems of control and employing a flexible attitude.  This meant responsibilities and duties were often shared between the Financial and Management Accounting disciplines, thus enabling Whiteabbey to gain valuable experience of the wider aspects of the financial management of a medium sized business, such as bought and sales ledger and cash management.
